Do more things that make you feel like yourself

Feeling a bit lost? Read this…

Like you, I have ups and downs and go through periods of feeling lost and not like myself.

Something I have learnt to do to ride these waves is to reconnect with the things that remind me of who I am at the core, my values, the things that matter to me, the experiences that make me feel like myself.

I have a list in the front of my ‘It’s a beautiful day’ planner that I reflect on regularly, it’s a list I wrote once when I was feeling lost and needed direction.

These are the things that make me feel like myself:

  • Being a big kid. Going down slides, acting like a clown at kid’s parties, dancing in the park even when people are looking. Being an ‘adult’ or what’s expected of me as an adult crushes my spirit sometimes, so I need to ensure I feel safe to be who I am often enough.

  • You’ve heard this from me a hundred times before, but I feel happiest outside. I spent most of my childhood outside riding a bmx and climbing trees with 6 boys so it’s my safe space.

  • Comedy…I love laughing and watching something funny, it makes me feel alive. I hate drama, fiction and movies with tension and big story lines. Simple is good for me.

  • We all love music in one way or another, but I grew up listening to my dad playing the piano everyday so for me, piano music reminds me of a part of myself that’s calm.

  • We are a social species, hard wired to live in communities and be connected to other people. Our survival used to depend on it.

We all feel comfortable connecting in different ways, some of you will flourish in large groups, others like me, with a tight core crew. But being connected fills my cup so when I’m lost, I have to remember that.

None of these things that make me feel like myself cost money, they are all just things that remind me who I am and make me feel alive, safe and a tiny bit less lost in challenging times.

What are the things that make you feel like the REAL you?
